Golden Week - big wastewater drainage cleaning!

Saturday May 7th was big wastewater drainage day in Futtsu. The city supplied hemp bags for the mud. It was an experience I did not want to have missed. There was about 10 cm of mud on the bottom of the drainage.  Our friendly neighbor kindly introduced me to the efficient technique.  In the end 6 hemp bags were full.  What else happened during this pleasant Golden Week holiday with great weather and also a bit of wind :) We did some work in the house and added some wooden boards to the wash basin and kitchen cabinets.  We used the same panels as was used by our 大工さん which turned out to be the cheapest and most easy one to process. We did the cutting at the Cainz home center (one cut 50 JPY with member card).  Finally spring is there and the frogs are croaking day and night and the grasshoppers are hopping. With other words it was again highly meditative.  PS: I did my first kite session after the accident.... it had to be to loose the fear.... but don't te...

Some thoughts about tranquility

Now the house is almost ready for basic living and to serve as a place to relax and enjoy. However I am sensing this habit to continuously improve and optimize things here and there and drive to the home center for a light bulb. It reminds me of out house in Germany where in hindsight I feel like I spend more time in the Home Center to buy flowers and tools then actually in our terrace or garden. 

How to prevent this?
  • Work in batches - defining time and budget for improvement and time when it is not allowed to buy or improve something 
  • Get in the right mind set of simplicity and abundance (put a sign on the door “welcome to the simple life”) , try to survive with the things available.  
  • Planning
  • Go paddling...



House update:
• The water inspection was finished


• Fusuma color were selected; after the material arrives at the shop the repair will start (probably sometime this week); the Fusuma in the bed room are completely destroyed and need to be replaced (15.000JPY/Fusuma); together with the Fusuma san we decided to spare the Fusuma between the Living room flooring and tatami section to reduce the costs. The Fusuma san will try to use the material from the spare Fusuma (he was a little bit disappointed that the Gaijin chose very traditional Japanese colors....)

• Fridge was bought and delivered (placed in the garage)
• Garage roof was finished (forgot to take a picture)
• Toilet tiling continued (it is a nightmare to clean the floor tiles)




Open topics:
• Fix the rain pipes (especially at garage and front --> this is causing the noise at night when it rains)
• Finish the toilet tiling (consider to do together with the 洗面 tiling
• Put a panel on the kitchen wall (tiling of kitchen counter, solution for the edges
• Workbench in garage (and clean up the tools - 5S!!!)
• Bookshelf (to share books)
• Workspace (Kotetsu - it is getting cold)
